The fabulous Kenai Peninsula is home to more wildlife than people. Kenai, the largest city on the peninsula, has only 7,000 residents. Oil was discovered near Swanson Lake in 1957, and Nikiski, just north of Kenai, is one of the few refineries in Alaska. But for the most part, this Peninsula is pretty much undeveloped.
The Kenai Peninsula enjoys a mild climate. The average January temperature is 17 degrees F and the July temperatures average about 65 degrees F. The peninsula receives an average of 32 inches of rain per year.
